UHPA Delegates Heading to AFT Convention!

UHPA Delegates Heading to AFT Convention!

As an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), this year UHPA has the opportunity to send Hawai‘i delegates to AFT’s 88th convention, which will be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas, from July 22 to July 25.

The biennial convention is the most important policymaking body of AFT. Delegates from all affiliates will gather together to vote on important resolutions, constitution and bylaws amendments, and participate in the election of the AFT president, secretary-treasurer, executive vice president, 43 vice presidents.

According to the AFT constitution and the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (commonly referred to as the Landrum-Griffin Act), all delegates must be in good standing and nominated and elected.

On April 15, UHPA distributed a call for nominations for five delegates and received the following five nominations:

  • Rosiana “Nani” Azman, UH Maui College faculty member
  • H. Keith Edwards, UH Hilo faculty member
  • Christian Fern, UHPA executive director
  • Karla Hayashi, UH Hilo faculty member
  • Daniel Port, UH Mānoa faculty member

Since there were only five nominations to fill the five delegate positions, an election was not necessary. Congratulations to our delegates!
